 XP advanced search commands?

Can someone tell me what is the difference between typing for example A* and A** in search engine? When we use just * and when **?

Using * makes it exact, using ** allows it to expand its search a bit more.

I get the same results that what confuses me. What do you mean with expand search? I don't understand this with **

I remember that A* list all the files no matter their extensions but A** list.........
